Operationally, skills that represent children’s phonological awareness lie on a continuum of complexity (see Figure 1). A continuum of complexity of phonological awareness activities Being phonologically aware means having a general understanding at all of these levels.įigure 1. Manipulating sounds includes deleting, adding, or substituting syllables or sounds (e.g., say can say it without the /k/ say can with /m/ instead of /k/). g., in the word broom, /br/ and /oom/), and individual phonemes (e.g., in the word hamper, /h/, /a/, /m/, /p/, /er/). g., in the word simple, /sim/ and /ple/), onset and rime (e. Spoken language can be broken down in many different ways, including sentences into words and words into syllables (e. Phonological awareness is the understanding of different ways that oral language can be divided into smaller components and manipulated. What principles should guide the assessment of phonological awareness?.What are documented effective principles that should guide phonological awareness instruction?.What is phonological awareness, and why is it important to beginning reading success?.The purposes of this article are to (a) clarify some of the salient findings from research on phonological awareness and reading and (b) translate those findings into practical information for teachers of children with learning disabilities or children who are experiencing delays in early reading. Still others are uncertain about the relationship between phonological awareness and early reading. Moreover, many people do not understand the difference between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics. For example, researchers are looking for ways to determine how much and what type of instruction is necessary and for whom. Despite the promising findings, however, many questions remain unanswered, and many misconceptions about phonological awareness persist. Perhaps the most exciting finding emanating from research on phonological awareness is that critical levels of phonological awareness can be developed through carefully planned instruction, and this development has a significant influence on children’s reading and spelling achievement (Ball & Blachman, 1991 Bradley & Bryant, 1985 Byrne & Fielding-Barnsley, 1989, 1991 O’Connor, Jenkins, Leicester, & Slocum, 1993). No area of reading research has gained as much attention over the past two decades as phonological awareness. Moreover, developments in research and understanding have revealed that this weakness in phonological processing most often hinders early reading development for both students with and without disabilities (Fletcher et al., 1994). The most common barrier to learning early word reading skills is the inability to process language phonologically (Liberman, Shankweiler, & Liberman, 1989). Becoming phonologically aware prepares children for later reading instruction, including instruction in phonics, word analysis, and spelling (Adams, Foorman, Lundberg, & Beeler, 1998 Chard, Simmons, & Kameenui, 1998). Considerations for assessing children’s phonological awareness are discussed, and descriptions of available measures are provided.Īctivities like substituting different sounds for the first sound of a familiar song can help children develop phonological awareness, a cognitive substrate to reading acquisition. Additional instructional design guidelines are offered for teaching children with learning disabilities who are experiencing difficulties with early reading. Research-based guidelines for teaching phonological awareness and phonemic awareness to all children are described. Common misconceptions about phonological awareness are addressed.

Sengstock said Brian Houston responded angrily, “yelling and swearing” before saying “you’ll be getting your money” and hanging up. He told the court he was “deeply hurt” by the comment, and asked Brian Houston if he had also been “molested by Frank”. Sengstock told the court that in that phone call Brian Houston said to him: “You know this is all your fault. Weeks later, Sengstock phoned Brian Houston, asking what had happened to the payment he had been promised by his father. Sengstock signed, but Houston did not pay the money, the court heard. In November 1999, Sengstock met Frank Houston at a McDonald’s in Thornleigh, in Sydney’s north, where he was asked to sign a blank napkin in exchange for $10,000. Sengstock’s mother told another family member who held a senior position in the church, and senior church officials were also informed of the abuse.Ī church leader wrote to him, saying “the secular courts are not the way to go,” and telling him he would “get a fair hearing” within the church.Ĭonfronted about the abuse, Frank Houston sought to apologise, telling his victim “he needed his forgiveness because he could not die and face God with this on his head”. Sengstock said he didn’t tell anyone else about the alleged abuse, because in the church homosexuality was frowned upon and because he was “anally raped repeatedly by Frank Houston, I felt that I had committed a sin”. He said he was frightened of his mother when he told her, and that she ultimately responded by saying she didn’t want to be responsible for turning in people from the church because it would be “like a mortal sin”. “I knew I was in trouble,” he told the court, claiming his family were usually strict with him and that he had previously “received bashings every day in accordance with their religion”. He said he then told his mother that Houston had been “molesting” him for several years, and that she went “dead silent”. Sengstock told the court that when he visited Houston, the pastor was masturbating under the table, and that he ran out of the centre and went home. He went to Houston’s office at the Christian Life Centre in central Sydney. He said that years later, as a teenager, he was sent by his mother to Houston for counselling, because he was “running off the road with the law”. He told the court that following the first incident in January 1970 he was “repeatedly” raped by Frank Houston. At night, he came into Sengstock’s room and sexually assaulted him while he was sleeping, placing his hands on his genitals, masturbating him and inserting a finger into his anus.īrett Sengstock was the first witness called on Monday. In an opening statement, crown prosecutor Gareth Harrison told the court that in January 1970 Frank Houston, then a pastor with the Assemblies of God church, was visiting Sydney and stayed with the Sengstock family for a week. Sengstock has since waived his right to anonymity as a victim of child sexual abuse. Houston has repeatedly maintained he did not report the allegation to police because Sengstock did not want that to happen. His trial, before magistrate Gareth Christofi, is set down for three weeks. Brian Houston’s father, Frank Houston, repeatedly raped and assaulted a young church member, Brett Sengstock, beginning when the boy was seven years old, in 1970.īrian Houston is on trial for failing to report the abuse to police after his father confessed in 1999 to sexually assaulting the boy.īrian Houston has pleaded not guilty to one count of concealing a serious indictable offence of another person. Of the games that I've played that she listed there isn't a single one where loot drops don't apply to both male and female NPCs regardless of the NPCs alleged occupation. Some games explicitly incentivise and reward this kind of behavior by having murdered women drop bundles of cash for the player to collect and add to their own stash. In fact, looking at the transcript, I see a lot of games on her discussion where what she's saying applies equally to NPCa of both genders. In all fairness that may have occurred after I stopped giving a fuck about being stealthy so there's that.Īs far as OPs points go I can't really find fault with that. They just don't.Ĭlick to expand.Really? I do not remember that. It's just all their dialog is about sex, so there is opportunity to give them character or a back story. You know the stripper in GTA 5 even a fair amount of dialog. The kind of problem is that the idle chat for a stripper, or prostitute is all about them inviting you to be perverse. Oh and then watchdogs did that clever thing with the profiler. It's not a lot, but when spent well it can lead to some neat characterizations. It is kind of possible to give every character a little bit of back story/personality. Like I am thinking back to playing it and am feeling kind of sick about some of the content. Taken as a whole, the game is very squick. The game dose punish you killing people, but I can't bring myself to defend the game on this ground. Well I guess you don't have to have to, but it is about the only way you can do that segment without getting shot at. There is that spot in absolution where you have to use the body of a dead stripper to distract some guards. Quick edit: I realize Thunderfoot made a video about exactly this, but I deliberately haven't mentioned him in this post, so this thread doesn't immediately get bogged down with yet another Youtube personality.Īnyway, any other Anita followers or Hitman Absolution players want to offer input on this? (Anita Sarkeesian transcript taken from here.) I feel this Hitman Absolution blunder is completely indefensible, and I'm interested to hear if most everyone else feels the same way. But to that I say what good would a strip club level in a game be if it was completely devoid of all strippers? It would feel empty and unrealistic.Īnyway, in the past, I've defended many of the things that Anita has said. You could argue that they should just remove the background decoration characters altogether. Some characters are literally only there as background decoration, because that's the entire purpose of "background decoration". Click to expand. It's simply not possible to give everyone in the game their own unique stories and individuality. You are given a bunch of points that you have to spend in order to pick up anything, from fifteen or so for a healing potion to a hundred for a new weapon to three hundred for a unique drop. Dice not used during combat can be cashed in afterward to give you more bartering points when it comes time to collect spoils.Įverything dropped by your defeated enemies has a barter value. Each turn a character can take two actions (one skill and one attack, spell or item), and only the first elemental action counts toward the combo count, so you can usually manipulate that to your advantage. The longer you - and monsters - chain together moves or skill of different elements (lightning, earth, air, ice, fire, water, light and dark) and earn a better die with each step from the third on until one of three things happen: someone repeats an element someone chains an element into its trump (listed in that order, although light and dark are trumps to each other and exist separately) or someone uses a neutral-element ability. The dice themselves are earned via an elemental combo system. On the whole it is an interesting gimmick, but it is really the only change from mindlessly hitting the A button to the point where basically every other mechanic in the game revolves around the dice at some level. You will also roll a giant handful of colorful polyhedra when the situation calls for it, such as when ambushed and checking to see how many turns you are at a disadvantage. And, oddly, there will still be some to-hit rolls required from time to time, usually for magical effects whose results are not as certain. But you can add extra dice to those rolls and “roll” them to increase your chances of hitting or damage. That’s one of the perks of this being a video game, after all. Oh, don’t worry! You won’t have to manually execute every to-hit and damage roll. Instead, combat plays out like any other menu-driven RPG, with the exception of the dice. The illusion falls a little short when it comes to combat, however, as there is no movement or noticeable range in combat despite the use of minis and a map of sorts. Similarly, narration is often directed at you, the player, as if a gamemaster were describing your surroundings from behind a rules screen. Instead of the usual presentation methods, Crimson Shroud represents the player characters and enemies as static miniatures placed in a crude dungeon model. It brings with it a unique aesthetic and interesting mechanics, seeking to replicate a tabletop pen-and-paper session in many ways. Crimson Shroud from Level-5 is one such eShop offering.
Lithium batteries are known for their high energy density, which means that they can power an alarm system for a longer period of time than other types of batteries. In conclusion, there are many good reasons to install a lithium battery backup solution for your alarm system – especially if you live or work in South Africa where crime rates are high and electricity blackouts are commonplace.įrequently Asked Questions about Lithium BatteriesĪ: A lithium battery, also known as a Life4Po battery, is a type of battery that offers a number of benefits for alarm systems. However, if you have a backup battery for your alarm panel, you can rest assured that even if the power goes out, your alarm will still be functioning and keeping you safe. This could put you and your property at risk. Either way, if your alarm system is running on mains power and the power goes out, your alarm will no longer be working. This can be due to load shedding by the power utility companies, or simply because of power outages in certain areas. Secondly, South Africa faces electricity blackouts on a regular basis. Having a backup battery for your alarm panel ensures that even if the power goes out, your alarm will still be operational. This means that there is a greater likelihood that your home or business will be broken into, and your alarm system could be the only thing standing between the criminals and your valuables. The importance of using a lithium battery in your alarm system.Ī lithium battery in an alarm panel as a backup solution is of vital importance in South Africa for several reasons įirstly, South Africa has a very high crime rate. Lithium is the way to go if you are looking for a reliable, long-lasting, and powerful battery for your alarm system. Overall, lithium batteries offer a number of advantages over lead-acid batteries for use in home alarm systems. Lithium batteries have a higher power density than lead-acid batteries, meaning they can provide more power for your alarm system for a given size. Lithium batteries can withstand higher temperatures than lead acid batteries, making them less likely to fail in extreme heat or cold.ĥ. Lithium batteries are less likely to leak than lead acid batteries, meaning there is less of a chance of damaging your alarm system.Ĥ. Lithium batteries have a much longer lifespan than lead-acid batteries, meaning you won’t have to replace them as often.ģ. Lithium batteries are lighter, making them easier to install and position within your alarm system.Ģ. There are a number of reasons why lithium (life4po) batteries are better for your home alarm system than their lead-acid counterparts.ġ. Even though this fight can be won for a bit in the early days, you will find your islands becoming a wilderness as you open several expansions.Įxpansions are this games way of increasing the size of the “open world”. The spawns happen very quickly, and you will only have a clear screen on your starting island for a short while before finding the work you have done has been ruined by a couple ores and flowers. I am a bit OCD with games like this and am 100% that person who will rip down all the growth from my farm in Stardew Valley before even really starting on farming because I don’t like the clutter. My one recommendation is to give in to the growth. In this way the progression again mimics that of Minecraft, where you are locked out from gathering certain resources based on your equipment, as well as you overall level and skill selection. With this metric ton of random loot, you will then take it to designated building stations where you will craft it into the next item you need to progress. The amount of resources that you will get into picking up as you progress is a little daunting, especially if you are also running a full farm and grinding out enemy drops. You run around breaking up trees and rocks with the occasional upgraded resource spawning. Speaking of crafting, we have a system that is quite the mix between basic gathering from Minecraft and stations like used in Stardew Valley. A whole lot of crafting included in this one. There are some Easter eggs and secrets hidden about, but overall you are playing with the environment and crafting your own story. You are playing to discover the world, not the story. There isn’t much when it comes to story, as you are pretty much just plopped into a tiny open area with a pickaxe and told to start hacking away at things that pop up around you. Don’t let the top-down pixel art fool you, this one is seriously deep and filled with content, and is a bright spot of the indie catalogue the Nintendo Switch boasts. With several inspirations from Minecraft to Stardew Valley to The Legend of Zelda you will have a ton to do and a unique set-up with which to do it. Category: Open World/Crafting/Explorationįorager is a 2D, open world, exploration game in which you will be crafting and resource gathering your way to a self-made base and expansion. While turkey hunting after sneaking up on a chatty tom, which eventually left the area, I noticed a missing arrow. I never thought this was a big deal until it happened to me. Why? As you move through brush and trees, you can lose an arrow out of your quiver. It matters a heckuva lot to any elk hunter or spot-and-stalk bowhunter. In terms of importance to bowhunters, none of this is that big of a deal to a bowhunter who walks into a tree stand on a well-defined path and then takes off their quivers when they’re up in the tree stand. Our favorite feature of the TightSpot Quiver is its adjustable arrow grippers. Plus, the grippers don’t wear out and get sloppy - as they wear, if they wear, you can adjust them tighter. If you change arrows to a smaller diameter arrow, no problem! You can tighten the grippers. TightSpot Quiver: Stop Losing Dangerous Arrows!įor me, there is one key to the TightSpot Quiver that immediately makes it a smart choice: You can adjust the tightness of the arrow grippers. One note: The TightSpot Quiver is not ambidextrous - you must choose the right-hand version if you’re right-handed and the left-handed version if you’re left-handed. If you get a new bow or get serious about dialing in long-distance shots, you’ll appreciate the adjustability. The nice thing about the TightSpot is that it is so adjustable. I spend a lot of time pushing through brush and trees and not having anything stick out is more important to me than perfect balance. For me, for hunting situations, I placed the quivers as tight as I could making sure that I didn’t affect the motion of my limb-driven drop-away Hamskea Hybrid Hunter Pro rest.Īs for balance, I want my arrows to line up parallel with my string, more so for overall tidiness than shot-helping balance. Plus, you can move the quiver up and down the carbon fiber rods. Here it’s shown reversed for extra clearance - basically, you have plenty of room to play with on your own bow setup. You can reverse the bracket for a tight fit or for more clearance for your particular rest. The TightSpot Quiver mounting bracket gives you massive adjustability. In addition, if you’re serious about tuning and finding the best overall balance for your hunting bow, you can rotate the TightSpot Quiver to move the center of gravity forward or back. While the TightSpot Quiver can mount very tightly to the side of your bow, the included mounting brackets and patented dovetail rail let you adjust how close or far you want the quiver from your riser. TightSpot Quiver Review: Excellent Adjustability The TightSpot Quiver helps mitigate all of this. The downside of that in a hunting situation is that you have more weight and components sticking out of your bow. So to compensate, some highly-tuned shooters will place a rear stabilizer out the lower back portion of their bows on the side opposite their quivers. Once you attempt longer and longer shots, minute effects of gravity and pressure start to add up.īecause the TightSpot quiver lets you mount the quiver closer to the bow’s center of gravity, you have less exterior force placed on the side of your bow.Įven with the TightSpot, there is some weight there. Of course, for short-distance archery, the weight of a quiver is fairly minor. The further away the quiver is, the more effect that weight will have. If you hold your bow upright with a pair of chopsticks under the swell of your grip, your bow will want to tip toward the side the quiver is attached to. If you think about this, any weight that extends out from the side of your bow’s riser will create some sort of torque or tilt or lean. This shifts more weight closer to the center of your bow, which reduces torque. Better yet, it has superior overall adjustability, vibration reduction and boasts arrow grippers you can tighten for perfect arrow fit. The TightSpot Quiver has a large hood to protect your broadheads. The TightSpot Quiver’s claim to fame starts with its ingenious mounting system: You can mount the TightSpot quiver much closer to the side of your compound bow than you can with most other quivers. This is what we learned: TightSpot 5-Arrow and 7-Arrow Quiver Reviewįor this review, I’ll focus primarily on the 5-arrow TightSpot quiver, then cover the differences between the 5-arrow and 7-arrow quiver versions. To get us a closer look at its quivers, TightSpot sent us both versions to evaluate this hunting season. In fact, the TightSpot Quiver is so good, it made our Best Gifts for Bowhunters Guide. They’re built in the USA and they come with TightSpot’s IronClad guarantee: If the TightSpot Quiver breaks on the original owner for any reason, TightSpot will repair or replace it at no cost. Our favorite quiver is undeniably the TightSpot 5-Arrow Quiver, but it’s followed by the TightSpot 7-Arrow Quiver.
